"I Hear America Singing"

1. Why does the speaker say that each person's singing should be blithe and strong?  He says this because he feels that everyman should have a carefree and happy life, but yet they should be strong and good at what they do.

2. The whole poem can be viewed as a catalogue. What is Whitman celebrating with this list? He is celebrating the great nationalism and freedom of America in this list of songs.

3.  Perhaps what Whitman has in mind here are not actual work songs associated with various trades, but something more subtle. What would you say this poem is really about? This poem is one about people singing about joy of freedom and happiness to live in a good strong country.

4. Would you say that Whitman is romanticizing or idealizing the life of the 19th Century laborer? Or would you say the songs he hears are expressions of independence and joy in life? Support your answers with specific references to the poem. This poem is more about independence and joy in life because laborers were the main class of people in the n19th century, so why not speak about the masses.  The laborers made America what it was, America is the people, so he showed the happiness of the people.
